How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT (Malaysia Playbook)
By Ben Yeoh, Founder, OMG Launch ·
When someone asks ChatGPT “what’s the best interior design firm in Mont Kiara?”, it doesn’t check who paid for ads. It assembles an answer from what it knows (training data) and what it finds (live web search). Your job is to be easy to find and easy to trust in both.
Here is the playbook we use.
Step 1: Make sure AI can actually read your site
Check your robots.txt. At minimum, allow the bots that power AI search and browsing:
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: ChatGPT-User
Allow: /
User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /
Then confirm your important content is in the initial HTML. Many AI crawlers don’t run JavaScript, so content that only appears after scripts load may be invisible to them.
Step 2: State the obvious — clearly
AI assistants recommend what they can describe with confidence. Your homepage and service pages should answer, in plain sentences:
- Who you are (legal name, brand name)
- What you do (specific services, not slogans)
- Where you operate (cities, states, “serving Klang Valley”)
- Who for (industries, company sizes)
- Proof (years operating, certifications, notable clients — only if true)
Back this up with Organization or LocalBusiness schema and links to your official profiles (sameAs).
Step 3: Write answer-first pages
For every service, create a page that opens with a 40–60 word direct answer, then expands. Use the questions buyers really ask as headings:
- “How much does [service] cost in Malaysia?”
- “How long does [service] take?”
- “[Your service] vs [alternative]: which is better?”
Comparison tables and clear pricing ranges are especially likely to be quoted.
Step 4: Get mentioned where AI looks
This is the part most businesses miss. AI assistants lean heavily on third-party sources. For Malaysian businesses, those often include:
- Google Business Profile and its reviews
- Industry directories and association listings
- Local news and business publications
- “Best [service] in [city]” roundup articles
- Reddit, Lowyat forums and other community discussions
- Your own YouTube and LinkedIn content
Run your key prompts, note which sites the AI cites, and target those sources first.
Step 5: Keep your facts consistent
If your address, phone number, prices or service list differ across sites, AI may repeat the wrong version — or skip you because it isn’t sure. Audit and align every listing.
Step 6: Track prompts, not just keywords
Build a list of 20–100 prompts your buyers use. Each month, run them across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Overviews and record:
| Metric | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Mention rate | How often you’re named at all |
| Recommendation rate | How often you’re in the shortlist |
| Citation rate | How often your site is linked as a source |
| Accuracy | Whether the facts AI states are correct |
| Competitor share | Who is recommended instead of you |
The short version
AI recommends brands it can find, understand and verify. Make your site readable, your facts consistent, your content quotable and your reputation visible across the web.
