How Much Does SEO Cost in Malaysia? (2026 Price Guide)

By , Founder, OMG Launch ·

“How much does SEO cost?” is one of the first questions business owners ask us, and the honest answer is “it depends”. That isn’t very useful on its own, so this guide gives you real numbers for SEO prices in Malaysia (harga SEO): what businesses typically pay, what each budget actually buys, and how to tell a fair price from a bad deal.

How much does SEO cost per month in Malaysia?

Most Malaysian SMEs pay RM1,500 to RM6,000 a month for SEO. E-commerce, multi-location and highly competitive brands typically pay RM6,000 to RM12,000 or more. Almost all SEO in Malaysia is sold as a monthly retainer rather than a one-off fee.

The spread is wide because “SEO” covers anything from a few hours of keyword tweaks to a full team producing content and earning press coverage every month.

Where these numbers come from: in October 2026 we reviewed the SEO pricing pages and guides ranking on the first page of Google Malaysia for “seo price malaysia”, “seo package malaysia” and “how much does seo cost in malaysia”. Published monthly ranges ran from about RM500 at the low end to RM12,000+ at the top, with most placing a typical SME between RM1,500 and RM6,000.

What do you get at each SEO budget?

Each budget buys a very different amount of work. These tiers are our own read of the Malaysian market, based on that published pricing and the work we see behind it.

Monthly budget Typical fit What you can realistically expect
Under RM1,000 Very small or one-off tasks A few hours of on-page tweaks or reporting. Rarely any real content or genuine links.
RM1,500 – RM3,000 Local SMEs, clinics, service businesses Technical fixes, Google Business Profile management, 1–2 pages or articles a month, basic tracking.
RM3,000 – RM6,000 Competitive SMEs, B2B, multi-service firms Steady content (3–4 pieces a month), some digital PR or link building, featured-snippet and AI Overview targeting.
RM6,000 – RM12,000+ E-commerce, multi-location, enterprise Large technical projects, content in several languages, regular PR placements, a dedicated strategist.

If a quote doesn’t tell you roughly how many pages, articles and links you get each month, ask. Content and links are where most of the money should go.

Why do SEO prices vary so much?

Six things decide most of the price:

  1. Competition. Ranking a law firm in KL takes far more work than ranking a niche industrial supplier. More competitors means more content and more links.
  2. Site size and health. A 20-page brochure site and a 5,000-product store need very different technical work. Older sites with technical problems cost more up front.
  3. Content volume. Pages and articles are usually the biggest line item, and expert-written content costs more than generic AI drafts — for good reason.
  4. Link building and PR. Genuine mentions in Malaysian publications take time to earn. Cheap “link packages” are usually spam.
  5. Locations and languages. Each branch, city or language (English, Bahasa Malaysia, Chinese) adds pages, profiles and tracking.
  6. AI search coverage. Tracking what ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews say about you, and fixing it, is work most traditional packages leave out.

Is a freelancer, agency or in-house hire cheaper?

A freelancer usually costs the least per month, an in-house hire the most, and an agency sits in between while covering the most skills.

Option Best for Watch out for
Freelancer Smaller sites, tight budgets, one specialist task One person rarely covers technical, content and links equally well. Check what happens when they are busy or away.
Agency Ongoing growth across technical, content and links Junior staff doing the work behind a senior pitch. Ask who will actually handle your account.
In-house hire Larger companies with a steady content pipeline A full salary plus tools (professional SEO tools typically cost over US$100 a month each), and one hire still needs support for development and PR.

Many businesses end up with a mix: an in-house marketer who owns the content, plus an agency or consultant for strategy, technical work and PR.

Does SEO cost more to show up in ChatGPT and AI Overviews?

Usually a little, because there is extra work beyond classic SEO. Buyers increasingly ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity for recommendations instead of scrolling through Google. Being named in those answers — sometimes called GEO — builds on the same foundation as SEO, but adds:

  • tracking a fixed set of buyer prompts across AI assistants each month,
  • making sure facts about your business are consistent everywhere AI reads,
  • earning mentions on the directories, reviews and publications AI trusts.

Some Malaysian agencies now sell this as “AI SEO”, either as an add-on or a separate package; we compare those prices in AI SEO in Malaysia: what it is and what it costs. If a provider says they “do AI SEO”, ask which assistants they track, how many prompts, and what the monthly report shows. If you just want to know where you stand first, a one-off AI visibility audit is the cheapest starting point.

What are the red flags in cheap SEO packages?

Whoever you hire, walk away if you see any of these:

  • Guaranteed first-page rankings. Google itself warns against anyone who promises this.
  • Link counts with no named sites, such as “400 backlinks a month”.
  • No access to your own data — Search Console, analytics or the reports themselves.
  • Reports full of rankings and traffic with nothing about enquiries or sales.
  • Long lock-in contracts before any work has been shown.

Is SEO worth the cost?

For most businesses with customers searching online, yes, provided you give it at least six months. A simple way to check: divide the monthly fee by the profit from one new customer. If a plan costs RM3,000 a month and each new client brings in RM1,500 in profit, SEO needs to win you two extra clients a month to break even. Unlike ads, the pages and authority you build keep working after you stop paying.

The catch is time. Expect early movement in 2–3 months and meaningful results in 4–6 months for most SMEs, and longer in very competitive categories. Budget for at least six months before judging results.

How much does SEO cost per month in Malaysia?

Most Malaysian SMEs pay between RM1,500 and RM6,000 a month for ongoing SEO. Local businesses in less competitive categories sit at the lower end; e-commerce, multi-branch and highly competitive industries such as legal, property and aesthetics often pay RM6,000 to RM12,000 or more.

Why are some SEO packages in Malaysia so cheap?

Packages under about RM1,000 a month cover only a few hours of work. They often rely on automated reports, AI-spun articles or link networks, which can do nothing at best and trigger a Google penalty at worst.

Is SEO a one-time cost?

No. A one-off audit or setup project fixes what is broken, but rankings depend on continued content, links and maintenance while competitors keep working. Most businesses budget for SEO monthly, at least for the first 6–12 months.

How much should a small business spend on SEO?

Work backwards from what one new customer is worth. If SEO only needs to bring in one or two extra customers a month to pay for itself, a RM1,500–RM3,000 monthly budget is usually enough for a local SME to build a solid foundation.

Is SEO dead now with AI?

No. AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews pull much of their information from web pages that search engines have already crawled and ranked. Strong SEO makes you more likely to be cited in AI answers, not less. What has changed is that SEO now needs to cover AI answers as well as the classic results.

Does SEO cost more if I want to show up in ChatGPT and AI Overviews?

Usually a little, because tracking AI answers and earning mentions on third-party sites is extra work. Much of the foundation is shared with SEO, so it is far cheaper to cover both in one plan than to hire two providers.
